Park Bench Players to Perform at Chedabucto Place Performance Centre in Guysborough
On Saturday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m., the Park Bench Players, a community-based theatre troupe consisting of adults with a mental illness diagnosis, take to the stage at the Chedabucto Place Performance Centre in Guysborough. The play they’ll be performing, “With A Little Help From My Friends” is a new production that was written by Jim Mulcahy, a former English and Drama teacher from Antigonish. The goal of the play is to debunk the myths around mental illness and to celebrate all the wonderful contributions those with a mental illness diagnosis make to our communities on a daily basis.
The play was performed to sell out audiences at the Clare Marie Gathering Place in Antigonish this past fall and as a result, has been requested by various community groups, educational institutions and government departments in the coming year.
Some things people are saying about this play:
“I have done many stories in my nine years here, but nothing has moved me like this one, including last night’s performance” - Corey LeBlanc, Reporter, Antigonish Casket
“Everyone needs to see this play. It’s funny, educational and tells the stories of what it means to have a mental illness in a genuine and respectful way” - Wendy Panagopoulos St. F.X. Nursing Department
"The Park Bench Players' production is a courageous and honest expose of how the personal difficulties and emotional challenges faced by so many of us can be confronted and overcome and how each person's road to recovery can be accomplished with the support of friends, family and community. In a musical and comedic way, the cast and crew show us that we are truly more the same than different, especially when we can celebrate our differences and connect in our sameness!" - Mel MacNeil, Director of Mental Health Services, Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority
The play is supported by the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority, Chedabucto Place Association and community sponsors. The Guysborough County Community Health Board and Guysborough Youth Health and Services Centre will co-host the event on January 28th.
There is no admission fee to the play but donations to cover costs will be accepted at the door. Media Contact: Dana Mason, Public Health, GASHA, 867-4500, extension 4807 - dana.mason@gasha.nshealth.ca► Learn more about our theatre ► View upcoming events ► Find out about renting the theatre
